Habe zwar den Ablauf von nicodex's BiosDump verstanden, aber was im Detail
passiert, da blick ich noch nicht ganz durch. Werds mir aber noch anschauen.

Datenstruktur des SMBIOS per WMI geholt. Ich weiß auch aus welcher Klasse,
allerdings ist der Eintrag bei mir immer leer gewesen.

Nur der Vollständigkeit wegen: es gibt noch einen ganz anderen Ansatz, bei dem es wirklich keine Rolle spielt, wo die SMBIOS-Daten liegen. Der Nachteil, wenn man das so nennen mag, ist die Nutzung von Admin-Rechten und eines selbstgeschriebenen Gerätetreibers. In diesem kann man mittels MmMapIoSpace (siehe auch hier) alle physikalische Speicheradressen in den normalen Speicher einblenden. Dieser Weg ist aber wesentlich komplexer und liefert auch nur die SMBIOS-Rohdaten, welche anschließend durch eigene Logikroutinen zu evaluieren sind.

Leider wird die Funktion vom WinRing0-Treiber (hier) nicht unterstützt, weswegen man selbst entwickeln muss.

GetSystemFirmwareTable('RSMB') mach auch nicht anderes als sich über den WMI-Provider die Daten zu besorgen
Allerdings gibt es diesen WMI-Provider standardmäßig erst in neueren Windows-Versionen (ab Windows XP Professional x64 / Windows Server 2003 SP1).

Administrative Rechte kann man sicherlich voraussetzen (falls es sein muss). Hier muss man erwähnen, dass nur 64 Bit Vista-Versionen gemeint sind, nicht etwa XP oder die Server-Variante 2003 (R2). Wohl aber die 2008er Variante.

Der Treiber an sich sowie das Zertifikat sind nun im meinem Fall kein Problem, wohl aber das Signieren eines Fremdtreibers. Das ist zwar auch eine Frage der Motivation, aber hauptsächlich der Verantwortung, denn wenn Dein von mir signierter Treiber Mist baut, sind meine Zertifikat-Kontaktdaten sichtbar. Das reicht für viele Anwälte schon aus.

Ja, die EventLog-Daten sind nur ein Beispiel; man kann - das Wissen vorausgesetzt - sehr viele interessante Dinge damit machen. Etwa auch die Datenstrukturen von Tastaturen oder Festplattencontrollern loggen. Acronis TrueImage nutzt bspw. einen eigenen Treiber, um die Festplattenzugriffe umzuleiten. Wenn ich ein Image erstelle, und während des Erstellvorgangs bestimmte Verzeichnisse von meiner Platte lösche, sichert Acronis Trueimage sie trotzdem mit, da der Treiber die Zugriffe abfängt und sie erst durchführt, sobald das Image erstellt wurde (Snapshot-Prinzip). Das war nur ein Beispiel...

Da geht es dir wie den meisten die ich kenne
Wie auch immer, so groß ist weder die Auswahl, noch der Preis (bei GlobalSign etwa 175€ pro Jahr und die üblichen Notarkosten).

edit: Danke für die Aufklärung. Ich hatte beruflich bedingt nur mit der Zertifizierung von Treibern zu tun, deswegen war mir der Unterschied bisher nicht bewusst.

Was hier vielleicht durcheinander gebracht wird, ist das "Signieren" und das "Zertifizieren". Während ersteres mit jedem beligen Code 3 Zertifikat durchgeführt werden kann und für die meisten Betriebssysteme ausreichend ist, benötigt man zum Zertifizeren ein Verisign Code 3 Zertifikat (499 US-$), was aber leider notwendig für Vista x64 sowie Server 2008 x64-Versionen ist.

Während beim Signieren nur der Treiber mit einem "Herstellerstempel" versehen wird, erfolgt beim Zertifizieren eine inhaltliche Prüfung, um etwa Schadfunktionen auszuschließen. Dafür gibt es vorgeschriebene Prozeduren in Microsofts Windows Quality Online Services (hier).
