Novell und Interbase

Hi,

in der Nacht hatte ich noch eine Diskussion mit den Borländern über Interbase. Bekanntlich sind die 6-11 Stunden hinter uns. Tatsächlich kam die letzte Antwort heute morgen um 5 Uhr. Immerhin. Bei AUQ habe ich irgendwann mal dazu einen Thread aufgemacht, aber da ist seit Stunden der Server ausgefallen. Wenn der wieder geht, hoffe ich, daß niemand sich beschwert, falls ich dann einen Link auf den Beitrag hier setze.

Yes, this is the answer for the question. But in the future ? My problem is:
Our Customers have a lot of Netware-Fileservers running. And our software (in future) should run with Interbase. The new Application will take over 3-6 month to be ready to run. If this problem isn't cleared I must decide, either to use Interbase or Novell, i.e. I must say to the Customers : "You must buy a new Database in any case" and if Interbase isn't running with Netware, you must also buy a new Network - System including Installation.

There is no chance whatever, IMHO, that there will be a version for
Netware. There was an IB 5 version for Netware but the sales were so
tiny that it was dropped.

I must be missing something. Why would they buy a new network OS? Just
buy a PC, install Linux or Windows, connect it to the network and
install InterBase. Unless you are dealing with a large number of users
the harware and software cost could be as little as $500 to $600.

Most major DB vendors either have already or have announced dropping Novell as a platform. It is a good file server, but an awful DB server. There are no plans to release a Novell version of IB.

Die hören sich etwas arrogant an, oder ? Werde aber noch einmal nachhaken, wie das so mit den IBX aussieht, die kennen mich ja jetzt ! Novell kann man aber anscheinend mittlerweile wirklich getrost abhaken.

Hi Hansa,

ich hatte Dir doch schon in einem anderem Forum gesagt, nehme einfach einen Linux-Rechner und mache dort die IB-Datenbank drauf, funktioniert hervorragend. Und um Datenbanken zu erstellen oder zu löschen, würde ich an Deiner Stelle diese Sachen in ein Programm reinschreiben, funktioniert genau so gut wie mit der IB-Console.

Habe gerade Deine Anfrage betreffend IB und Novel gelesen. Ich denke da hast Du keine Change.

Es gibt aber eine Alternative! Setz doch einfach anstelle von IB, SQLAnywhere von Sybase ein, dieser Server läuft auf Windows, Windows CE, NetWare, Linux und SUN-Solaris. Ich habe sehr gute Erfahrungen mit SQLAnywhere gemacht. Habe gerade einen Vertrag mit Sybase abgeschlossen und bezahle pro User-Lizenz nur noch 94 Euro. Muss dafür aber 100 Embedded-Lizenzen abnehmen. Auch die normalen Lizenzen-Gebüren sind in einem vernünftigen Rahmen.
